It’s another day in your pretty ordinary, somewhat boring week. You may have spent your day in the office, classroom, driving to and from place to place or stuck inside your house. It consisted of all the things you do…EVERY. DAY.
Our circumstances are all a little different, but we all feel a little “blah” sometimes in our day-to-day life.
So, what is it that causes that mundane feeling of discontentment, restlessness and “everyday-ness?”
It’s actually a pretty simple and straight-forward answer. We need more Jesus.
Just Another Day
It’s easy to feel blah and almost depressed when you view your life in the everyday, same thing, routine-filled day to day it can be. That’s not, however, how God wants us to view the lives He’s so graciously given to us.
He tells us over and over throughout scripture that our lives are gifts and something to be treasured.
“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” -2 Corinthians 9:15 CSB
Our daily routines and to-do lists are easy to just jump into and stay focused on all day, every day. We need to remember one very important thing, however. Jesus. He’s at the center of our days, for He gives them to us.
Let’s not forget that our days are gifts. We aren’t guaranteed a tomorrow, but we do have right now. Our present is a present directly from God. Let’s not take it for granted or get caught up in the hype of having a picture-perfect life.
Stop Comparing
I think sometimes we get that dull longing for something more or better, when we start looking at the lives of others. We see their highlight reels on social media and think that they’re life is so glamorous and perfect, in comparison to our ordinary, uneventful lives. We start the comparison game and long for what they have and what they get to do.
Let me tell you, that’s a very dangerous, rocky terrain we don’t want to tread on.
I’m so guilty of comparing my life to others and I start recognizing it when I start feeling down and discontent. God’s Word and prayer are the tools I use to get me out that empty pit of despair.
“And I urge you all the more to pray that I may be restored to you very soon.” -Hebrews 13:19
God didn’t create us differently from one another so that we’d compare ourselves and lust over what people have or look like. We should embrace our differences, celebrate other people’s successes and be thankful there’s literally no one else like us or ever will be.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” -Ephesians 2:10 CSB
The Life of Jesus
Let’s reflect for a minute about Jesus and the life He lived here on earth. He never had a cushioned, easy life. He worked hard in His trade and especially in His calling. He embraced the mundane day-to-day journey and gave His all, no matter what.
“Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 2:5 CSB
God sent Jesus to live among us and share His love with everyone. Most significantly, He came to save us from ourselves and our sinful, worldly natures. We may not have as big or as important of a mission that Jesus had, but our lives are valuable and have an important role to play in God’s story.
When we feel like there’s nowhere else to turn, turn to the Word of God. Across the pages you’ll see all signs pointing directly to Jesus. He’s the example we need of living life well.
Only One
Remember one very important thing – you only have ONE life to live.
You can try changing things, meeting new people, going from new place to new place, altering your looks; but you’ll soon grow weary. It won’t take you long to realize that none of those things bring contentment.
Jesus is the only One who brings us lasting and perfect peace. He will dissolve the anxiety, fear and depression from your life, if you trust Him.
Our life is the only one we get here on earth. There’s no redo’s or rewind buttons to push. We’ll make mistakes, that’s inevitable, but we have real opportunities to grow and find grace in God.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.’ -2 Corinthians 12:9a CSB
Mundane Turned Magnificent
Life is messy sometimes. And hard. And tiring.
There’s hope in it all though. His name is Jesus. He is the answer to the discontentment and that occasional dull feeling in our lives. His desire is to deliver us through it and help us come out feeling stronger and satisfied with the lives we have.
Through the everyday tasks and jobs we do, we can find wonder and grace. God is constantly seeking us and looking for any moment we can give to Him. Those moments don’t have to be big, over the top, or extravagant. Even in the simplest of things: playing with your toddler, making dinner, driving to work, washing dishes, etc, you can see a glimmer of Jesus and feel Him near.
The moments we have, big or small, we can be thankful for. God gives us the ability to perform the tasks we have to do at home, in the office, in our marriage, as parents, etc. We’re equipped with everything we need, when we trust and put our faith in the Lord. When we start focusing more on the blessings in our lives, we stop concentrating on what we feel we’re lacking.
When we have Jesus, we’re not lacking anything at all.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.” -Psalms 23:1
In Closing…
Remember that your life is a gift and a blessing directly from the Lord. It may not be glamorous or full of Instagram-worthy photos every day, but it’s real and raw and full of God’s love. He’s in the every day moments, even the ones that feel gray and gloomy. There is true meaning to your life, and sometimes Jesus (joy, hope) is found right at the center of those mundane moments.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the blog, friends!
I pray you all find meaning in your mundane moments and cling more tightly to Jesus.

Hi Brooke! So glad I found your site and post. I keep reading about the meaning in the mundane everywhere lately. I’ve recently read two books, Rocking Ordinary and the Liturgy of the Ordinary. I highly recommend. I’ve realized that it’s my pride that rails against the smallness of everyday life. I want big and exciting, but God wants to work in my mundane.
May we continue to surrender to all these common moments and find Jesus there. Thanks for the reminder!

I’m glad you found it too! Thanks for checking it out! 🙂
I will have to check out those books. I appreciate the recommendation!
I so agree with you that sometimes pride gets in the way of what God is doing in our lives. He works through every moment, big or small.
Thank you so much for your comment! Glad to connect with you.

“Through the everyday tasks and jobs we do, we can find wonder and grace. God is constantly seeking us and looking for any moment we can give to Him.” Yes! I wrote a very similar post back in November, as I was convicted that every task can be used as an act of worship. I’ll definitely be sharing!
