I’m sure you have too.
I’m a white female who hasn’t experienced regular discrimination or prejudice. I’m the wife of a state trooper who supports law enforcement. These aren’t things that define me, but they definitely lay heavy on my heart in light of what’s happened.
I’m also a follower of God and I feel it’s my responsibility to mourn this man’s life and his family so dearly missing him, and pray for healing and comfort over them. I also feel it’s my responsibility to pray that others remember that there are, indeed, a vast number of good police officers who do their job correctly and with moral integrity and honor.
I feel sickened that this man died. I feel angry that some officers have tarnished the badge they wear and spread even more negativity upon the police, like my husband.
Most importantly, I’m truly heartbroken that evil like this exists in our world. That evil could take root so deep in the hearts of people.
Hate, disrespect, revenge or any act of unnecessary violence is never the answer to evil. Only love will prevail over evil. Only God can overcome the evil in the hearts of many.
I believe my “job” as a christian isn’t to shove my beliefs and values down the throats of others. I do believe it should be my motivation as a believer to shine the love of Christ onto others. To give understanding and compassion, even when it’s not easy. To forgive even those hardest to forgive. To love others and expect nothing in return.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16
These aren’t easy things to do, especially in this broken world we live in. They are worth striving towards though. God is a good Father that is always worth following. He has the answers that I promise we won’t find here on earth. He will love us and remain steadfast no matter what.
When my heart is heavy, I’m feeling fearful and I simply can’t make sense of this sometimes senseless world, I know I can turn to Him. I know He’s a safe place and He always makes perfect sense.
“You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked.”
Psalm 12:7
My urge is to call others to pray. Pray for George Floyd’s family. Pray for the city of Minneapolis. Pray for our officers. Pray for love to overcome hate. Pray for God’s goodness to outshine any evil.
Let’s collectively, any race, gender, background, etc., stand together and pray for light in this darkness. Let’s love each other, even when it’s tough. Let’s see past ourselves and our views, political stances and other barriers in our way, and just simply be kind and compassionate.
Let’s heal together and remember that we have a good, loving Father who loves us and mourns with us.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4
